Before I bought this gate, we used whatever we needed to use to block the stairs from our dogs and grandson. It was ugly and a pain in the butt. This gate fixes it perfectly. I am so pleased with how it retracts and is virtually unnoticeable during the day. It is made of a sturdy mesh material that the cats have put their claws into, but not damaged at all. The gate automatically locks after 10 seconds or so, so even when the kitties push against it, it stays firm in place. It also goes almost all the way down to the floor, which we are grateful for, but it is tall/short enough for me (a 5'3 person) to step over if I need to in the middle of the night. Installation was smooth with clear instructions and it seems like it can be versatile to work in a variety of different locations as long as you can drill 4 screws into the material on each side.
